The Siri agent Apple hasn't shipped yet

Federico Viticci reviews Open Minis, an iPhone and iPad chatbot he describes as “getting a preview of Siri AI’s agentic future, today.” The twist that makes it work: rather than being one more model wrapper, it wires a frontier model into Apple’s own system frameworks through the official third-party APIs — Reminders, Calendar, Maps, HomeKit, HealthKit, Files, Music, even Vision for OCR.

This is the part we find quietly encouraging. Everything Open Minis does, it does with APIs Apple already ships to every developer. The capability wasn’t missing from the platform; the ambition was. A small team pointed a capable model at the frameworks sitting right there and got something that behaves like the assistant the platform owner keeps promising. Craft over privilege — the tools were public, someone just built with taste.

Viticci’s line is the one worth keeping: this is “a real, currently shipping example of what Siri AI could be.” The machine belongs to its owner, and so do its APIs — the best agent for your phone may well come from someone other than the company that made it.
